Although no formal numbers are available regarding number of surgeries undertaken nationally, or how many pulse oximeters are available .. the general consensus is that operating theatres in Sudan are very poorly equipped.
A recent auditing by the SLI group showed that pulse oximeter prevelance was 45% in OTs in Khartoum state and less than 1% in recovery areas !
A landmark study by the WHO endorsing Surgical Safety Checklist worldwide, proved that we can cut death rates by half! The World Health Organization recognized the critical importance of universal access to pulse oximetry in their Second Global Patient Safety Challenge (pulse oximetry is item number 4 on the Checklist).
That is why Lifebox was developed, a major international initiative to combat the global pulse oximetry gap. By providing low-cost, robust oximeters and pulse oximetry education we can give anaesthesia providers the tools and training they need to make surgery safer.
The World Health Organization and the World Federation of Societies of Anaesthesiologists set about designing the ideal pulse oximeter for low-resource settings.
The result was the oximeter which Lifebox Foundation supplies through the manufacturer, Acare Technology Co. Ltd. This surpassed the requirements with all these specifications and is available for only 200 Euros.
I’m convinced, how can I help?
There are a number of ways you can help with
1. Donate so we can buy as many pulse oximeters as possible, Stage One of our proposal covers Khartoum State, with espcial emphasis on hospitals carrying out paediatric and obstetric surgeries;
we estimate we will need around 50 oximeters for that ! You can do that through SDUI website
2. If you are a medical doctor, probably you can volunteer to receive a training in interpretation and maintenance of pulse oximeter (1 day course in London) and then help train the trainers in Khartoum
3. Spread the Word, like our facebook account or follow us on Twitter !
